It has been the norm for young people to have their wisdom teeth operation as soon as they come out. This is usually done after graduation in high school so that they don’t have to bother with it anymore as they enter college.
The reason for this is that many think that wisdom teeth are useless and usually does not fit along with the other teeth. This is also thought to be a source of infection and might cause trouble later on. Wisdom teeth are also referred to as third molars and it is common for these teeth to grow out of alignment and many can be impacted which means that it does not grow out of the gum line fully. The reason for this is because it comes out later between the age of 17 and 25. During this time, the jaw is already set and all teeth have filled the space.
Forsyth Institute’s director of the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry said that in history, Richard Niederman, oral surgeons believed that it is better to remove them. They have the mentality that it is better to be safe than feel sorry later on.
Nowadays, the message is no longer unanimous as there is a claim from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons that health wisdom teeth can be kept as long as regular exams and X-rays are conducted. This is to make sure that trouble will be spotted as soon as it happens. The association is composed of 9,000 surgeons – the very same ones that performed wisdom teeth operation to majority of the individuals in the United States.
There are even critics that claim that it is better to avoid the operation because of the risks presented by surgery and anesthesia.
According to a dentist in California, Jay Friedman, there might be reasoning as to why the 30 per cent has to be removed. Back in 2007, the American Journal of Public Health published an article regarding Friedman’s thought that wisdom teeth operation conducted to 10 million people every year can be considered a health hazard to the general public because of the harm it could cause.
The American Dental Association stands with their believe that not all patient are the same and there are those that need wisdom teeth operation while others can keep their teeth as long as it is monitored regularly.
